Domestic transfers at Sydney Airport
Two domestic terminals, one rule: know which is yours before the driver needs to. We handle that — and the timing — from your flight number.
Which domestic terminal do I need, T2 or T3? #
T2 and T3 are both domestic terminals, and which one you need depends on the airline operating your flight. Your boarding pass names it — check there first. We will not tell you which airline uses which building: that allocation is a commercial arrangement, and it has changed before.
The two sit side by side on the same domestic precinct, so arriving at the wrong one is a walk rather than a disaster — but it is a walk with bags that nobody wants at 6am. When you enter a flight number, the terminal follows from the airline's own data instead of a rule of thumb, so the driver targets the right kerb. Rebooked onto a different carrier? Email the new flight number to bookings@wsitransfers.com.au and the pickup point moves with it.
T1 is the international terminal and it sits apart from T2 and T3. If your boarding pass says T1, you want the T1 international page instead.
How is my pickup timed when I land on a domestic flight? #
Your pickup is timed from your actual landing, not from the time printed on your ticket. A domestic arrival has no border processing to clear, so the clock is really the walk from the gate plus the carousel if you checked a bag. When you enter the flight number, the suggested pickup is 30 minutes after its estimated landing, and you can move it.
Because the trip carries your flight number, an early landing, a holding pattern or a long taxi to the gate all move the pickup automatically, and the 60 minutes of free waiting is measured from when the aircraft actually lands. Tell us whether you have checked luggage. That one answer is the difference between a driver waiting for you and you waiting for a driver.
How early should I leave for a domestic departure? #
Sydney Airport's own advice is to arrive one hour before a domestic flight with hand luggage only and two hours before with checked bags. Our quote form works backwards from your departure — check-in margin first, then the honest drive from your suburb at that hour — and shows the suggested pickup before you pay.
Those are margins, not rules. The airline sets the actual bag-drop and boarding-gate cut-offs and prints them on your itinerary, so if yours are tighter, slide the pickup earlier. The fare does not change when you do. Flying out on the first day of the school holidays with a pram and three cases? Allow more, not less.
Can you pick me up for a 6am departure? #
Yes, a pre-dawn pickup can be requested like any other. Sydney Airport operates under an 11pm to 6am curfew, which has defined exemptions, so scheduled departures bank up at the start of the day. For a 6am domestic flight, Sydney Airport's advice puts you at the terminal by 4am with checked bags, or 5am with hand luggage only, and leaving home before that, in the dark. Trips from 10pm to 5.59am carry a 20% late-night surcharge.
That cuts both ways. The drive is the predictable part at that hour; inside the terminal, how busy bag drop and security are at that hour is the part you cannot control. Take the earlier pickup, not the later one. Late at the other end of the day, a delayed evening arrival moves your pickup rather than stranding a driver at the kerb, because we are tracking the flight either way.
Flying from Western Sydney International instead? WSI has no curfew, so the 6am bunching does not apply there — see WSI transfers.
Child seats, prams and bags on a domestic run #
Declare everyone and everything when you request the fare: passengers, suitcases, carry-ons, the pram, the golf clubs. The vehicle is chosen from that list, so a family of five with five cases does not meet a sedan at the door. Child restraints are fitted before the driver arrives — nothing gets installed at the kerb with a toddler on your hip.
NSW restraint requirements depend on your child's age and size, and Transport for NSW publishes the current version — worth two minutes if it has been a while since you last checked. Tell us the ages up front and we match the seat; the NSW child seat rules explain which one each age needs. Prams travel in the boot, and if you are gate-checking one it helps to say so, because it changes how the boot is packed. Capacity by vehicle is on the vehicles page.
How do I connect between a domestic terminal and T1? #
T1 sits apart from T2 and T3 — a separate building, not a walk. If your domestic and international flights are on separate tickets, moving between them is your job rather than the airline's, and it needs real time in the plan.
The train between the terminals is quick, but the Sydney Airport station access fee is charged per person on top of the Opal fare: $18.61 adult and $16.64 child, youth, concession or senior. It is not covered by the Opal daily or weekly travel cap — it has a separate cap of its own. Transport for NSW publishes the figures, and our airport train fee panel links the source. For two adults and two children shifting terminals with luggage, that is worth pricing before assuming the train is the cheap option.
We run terminal-to-terminal transfers, and the more common version too: a domestic arrival and an international departure far enough apart that you would rather spend the gap anywhere but an airport. Whether your bags are checked through depends on how the tickets were issued, and the airline that issued them is the one to ask. If the onward leg is international, the T1 page covers the check-in margin to build in.
FAQ
Domestic transfer questions
Which domestic terminal does my airline use?
T2 and T3 are both domestic, and which one you need depends on the airline operating your flight — your boarding pass names it. We do not guess: your booking asks for the flight number, so the driver targets the right kerb from the airline's own data rather than from a rule of thumb that can change.
How long before a domestic flight should I be at the terminal?
Around 90 minutes before departure is a comfortable margin for bag drop and security. Our suggested pickup time works backwards from that, plus the drive from your door.
What's the pickup buffer for domestic arrivals?
We schedule pickup for a sensible buffer after actual touchdown — enough for the walk and baggage claim — and the driver adjusts live as the flight tracking updates.
Do you fit child seats for a domestic transfer?
Yes. Request the restraint you need when you ask for the fare and it is fitted before the driver arrives, so nothing is installed at the kerb. NSW restraint requirements depend on your child's age and size, and Transport for NSW publishes the current rules. Give us the ages up front and we match the seat.
