International transfers at Sydney Airport
Long-haul travel punishes bad timing twice: at check-in cut-off on the way out, and at a lonely kerb on the way in. T1 transfers are about margins — ours are built in.
How long after landing will I actually be out of T1? #
It varies, and nobody can tell you a firm number in advance. Between touchdown and the footpath there is the taxi to the gate, the walk to passport control, the queue there, the baggage belt, and biosecurity screening on the way out. Some arrivals clear quickly. When several wide-body flights land in the same half hour, they do not.
That is why the pickup is timed from your actual touchdown rather than the arrival time printed on your ticket, and why airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting measured from landing. When you enter the flight number, the suggested pickup for an international arrival is 60 minutes after its estimated landing, against 30 minutes for a domestic one. You should not be paying a driver to watch a clock while you stand in a queue you did not choose.
Keep the hour after the airport loose. Nothing later in the day should depend on the border moving at your preferred speed.
Where do I meet my driver at T1? #
At the meeting point we confirm with you for T1, repeated in the message your driver sends once you have landed. Kerbside arrangements at Sydney Airport are set by the airport and change from time to time, so we do not ask you to memorise a zone number off a web page.
If you would rather be found than have to find someone, add meet and greet when you request the fare. The driver parks, comes into the T1 arrivals hall, waits at the arrivals exit holding a board with the passenger name on it, and takes the trolley from there. After a long-haul flight, in a building you have never seen, that is the difference between arriving and searching.
How does my driver know my flight landed? #
From your flight number. You give it when you request the fare, we track the flight, and the driver works to your actual touchdown: earlier if you land early, later if you are held on the tarmac or sent around. Nobody is waiting on the arrival time you typed in yesterday.
Two things tracking cannot see are a diversion to another airport and a rebooking onto a different flight number. If either happens, email bookings@wsitransfers.com.au with your name, mobile and the new flight as soon as you have a signal. Everything else, from a delay to a gate change to a long taxi in, is already handled without you doing anything.
What if I am held up at immigration or biosecurity? #
Nothing needs to happen at your end. Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting measured from your actual landing time, so passport queues, a slow belt and a biosecurity inspection are already inside the window. Your driver stays where they are.
If you are pulled aside for a longer inspection, or a bag does not appear and you have to file a report, message the driver from where you are standing with whatever you know. Silence is the only thing that genuinely causes trouble. Waiting beyond the free window is $1 a minute, which is the honest version of “we will wait as long as it takes”.
Can my driver take me from T1 to T2 or T3 for a domestic connection? #
Yes, and that leg can be booked on its own. T1 sits apart from the domestic terminals, so an onward domestic flight means moving yourself and every bag you own between separate buildings at the end of a long flight. Allow real time for it.
Which domestic terminal you need depends on the airline operating the second flight. T2 and T3 are both domestic and your boarding pass names yours; we do not guess it from a rule of thumb. Your airline decides how an international to domestic connection is handled, including whether you collect your checked bags and put them back in, so follow its transfer instructions and give that step real time.
- Request the terminal transfer with your inbound flight number so the timing follows your landing, not the schedule.
- Tell us when you request it if the connection is tight. We would rather say so honestly than take a job that cannot work.
- Using the train between the airport stations instead? A station access fee applies per person on top of the Opal fare, and it sits outside the Opal daily and weekly travel caps.
What do I do if my phone does not work when I land? #
Write down or screenshot the meeting point before you leave home, so it is readable with no data at all. When you land, join the airport wi-fi if you can. If you cannot, go straight to the meeting point and stay there.
Do not walk the length of the terminal looking for a car. Two people searching in opposite directions is the reliable way to miss each other. The driver knows your flight landed and is waiting on that basis whether or not your messages get through, and a name board does not need your phone to work either.
- Screenshot or print the meeting point, and any driver details you have been sent, before you fly.
- Write our email address, bookings@wsitransfers.com.au, somewhere that is not your phone, for when you next have a connection.
- If you can get online at all, a message is enough to reach your driver. If you cannot, go to the meeting point and stay there.
- Arranging this for someone else? Give them the meeting point too, and give us their mobile when we call.
How early should I get to T1 for an international departure? #
Sydney Airport's own advice is to arrive three hours before an international flight unless your airline says otherwise, and your airline's check-in and bag-drop deadlines are the times that bind you. Tell us the departure time and we add the realistic drive from your suburb at that hour, then show you the suggested pickup before you pay.
Sydney Airport has an 11pm to 6am curfew with defined exemptions, so early departures cluster at the start of the day and need pre-dawn pickups. Western Sydney International, which opens to passengers on 25 October 2026, has no curfew and one terminal for domestic and international flights, about 61 km by road from the Sydney CBD. Check which airport your ticket names.
FAQ
International transfer questions
How early should I be at T1 for an international flight?
Three hours before departure is the standard airline recommendation. Our suggested pickup time builds that in on top of the realistic drive from your door.
How long after landing will my driver expect me?
International arrivals get a longer buffer than domestic — immigration, baggage and customs take time. We track the flight and the driver adjusts to actual touchdown, with generous free waiting from landing.
Can my driver meet me inside the arrivals hall?
Yes — add meet & greet to your quote and your driver waits at the arrivals exit with a name board and helps with your trolley from there.
Is the train cheaper than a transfer from T1?
The train fare itself is cheap. The station access fee is the extra: charged per person on top of the Opal fare at the airport stations, $18.61 adult and $16.64 child, youth, concession or senior, and it sits outside the Opal daily and weekly travel caps. Tapping on at Mascot station instead costs $10.34 (plus the train fare).
My flight was diverted, or I have been rebooked. What do I do?
Send us the new flight number, by email to bookings@wsitransfers.com.au, as soon as you have a signal — with your name and mobile so we can match it to the trip. That is the one situation the tracking cannot solve for you, because it watches the number you gave us and cannot follow you onto another aircraft or into another port. Everything short of that is handled without you.
I land after midnight. Can you pick me up?
Yes, you can request it. Sydney Airport's 11pm to 6am curfew has defined exemptions, so arrivals in those hours do happen, and the pickup works to your actual touchdown. Trips from 10pm to 5.59am carry a 20% late-night surcharge, shown in the fare before you pay. Western Sydney International, which opens to passengers on 25 October 2026, has no curfew at all.
Should I add meet and greet if it is my first time in Sydney?
It is the clearest case for it. The driver comes into the T1 arrivals hall, waits at the arrivals exit with a board showing the passenger name, then takes the trolley to the car. It is chosen when you request the fare and priced as its own line before you pay. It cannot be added at the kerb, because meeting you inside means parking.
