Sydney is a two-airport city from 25 October 2026, the first passenger day at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport — WSI — at Badgerys Creek. WSI differs from Kingsford Smith (SYD) at Mascot in three ways that change how you plan a trip: it has no curfew, it has one terminal, and it sits on the other side of the city. Should I fly from WSI or Sydney Airport?
Fly from whichever airport has your airline and route at the time you want, then weigh the trip to the terminal. Airlines with announced WSI start dates include Jetstar from 25 October 2026, Air New Zealand from 26 October 2026, Singapore Airlines from 23 November 2026 and Qantas from 28 March 2027. Any airline that has not announced WSI services flies from Sydney Airport, so for many trips the choice is made for you.

Where the airline does give you a choice, three things decide it: the hour you want to fly, whether you would rather not think about terminals, and which airport is nearer your door.
Why does WSI having no curfew matter?
Because it allows flight times Sydney Airport cannot offer. Sydney Airport operates under an 11pm–6am curfew with defined exemptions. WSI has no curfew, so airlines can schedule arrivals and departures at any hour.
That makes late-night departures and pre-dawn arrivals possible in Sydney in a way they have not been. Airlines still have to choose to use those hours, so check the real timetable rather than assuming. If you are comparing flights across the two airports, don’t filter out the odd-hour options.
The catch is on the ground. Public transport to WSI runs to a timetable, so a flight in the small hours usually means a car.
What does one terminal change?
It removes the terminal decision. WSI handles domestic and international flights in one integrated terminal. At Sydney Airport, T1 is international and T2 and T3 are both domestic, and which one you need depends on the airline operating your flight — your boarding pass names it.
- One drop-off, one pickup point. Whoever is meeting you can’t be at the wrong terminal, because there isn’t one.
- Domestic-to-international connections under one roof. No moving between terminals with your luggage.
- Learn it once. The drive, the kerb and the walk are the same for every trip you take there.
Which areas are nearer WSI than Sydney Airport?
By road, Penrith, Blacktown, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Greater Western Sydney are nearer WSI. Parramatta, Castle Hill, the Hills District, Ryde, the Sydney CBD, the Inner West, the Eastern Suburbs, the Northern Beaches and the Sutherland Shire are nearer Sydney Airport.
Penrith is the clearest case for WSI: about 24 km by road, against about 58 km to Sydney Airport. Parramatta is the one that surprises people — it is in Western Sydney, but by road it is nearer Sydney Airport (about 26 km) than WSI (about 39 km). The Sydney CBD is about 61 km by road from WSI.
Road access to WSI is via the toll-free M12 Motorway, which connects the M7 at Cecil Hills with The Northern Road at Luddenham. Typical drive times and fares for your area are on our WSI transfer hub.
How do you get to WSI without a car?
By bus, or by train to St Marys and a free shuttle. Transport for NSW runs five bus routes to the airport — 772 from Mount Druitt, 790 from Penrith, 825 and 860 from Liverpool, and 845 from Campbelltown. WSI Link, a free shuttle between St Marys station and the terminal, runs from the first passenger flights until Sydney Metro services start. There is no train to the airport until the Metro line opens.

When is a booked transfer worth it for WSI?
Not always. If you’re travelling light from Penrith or Liverpool, route 790 or 860 will do the job for a bus fare. A booked transfer earns its money in four situations: luggage a bus doesn’t suit, a flight outside the bus and shuttle timetables, a group too big for one taxi, or wanting the fare fixed before you travel rather than discovered at the end.
How do you use a brand-new airport well?
Rely on what is published, keep standard margins and sort the ground legs early. Every new airport has a shakedown period: wayfinding gets adjusted, kerbside flows get tuned, and staff and passengers learn the building together. A few honest tips for the first months:
- Don’t trust folklore — there isn’t any yet. Nobody has “always parked in the good spot” at WSI. Rely on what the airport publishes and what your transfer operator confirms for your trip.
- Arrive with standard margins. Until WSI-specific guidance exists, the usual rules serve well: about 90 minutes before domestic departures, three hours before international.
- Pre-book the ground legs. Taxi queues and rideshare pricing at a new airport are unknowable in advance; a fixed fare quoted against your flight number is not.
- Check the odd hours. If your flight is late at night or before dawn, make sure your ground transport covers that hour. Early-morning and late-night trips can be requested with us, and trips between 10pm and 6am carry a late-night surcharge that is included in the fare you are quoted.
What does a second airport mean for Sydney travel?
For Western Sydney, a much shorter trip to an international airport from the suburbs nearest Badgerys Creek. For everyone else, a second airport with its own schedule to compare against Kingsford Smith.
